Our Dementia Choir
Actor Vicky McClure recruits people with dementia to form a dementia choir. And experts from the fields of medicine, music therapy and performance are on hand to nurture and rehearse with them. This is a story where personal achievements meet breaking science. Advanced brain scans, world firsts and revelatory experiments reveal the miraculous effects that playing and listening to music can have on the brain. The shared journey culminates in a huge public performance at a major event. Will it all come together on the night?

1. Search For Choir Members
Vicky starts her search for choir members, meeting people with different types of dementia and at different stages. One of the first to join is former woodwork teacher Chris, whose frontotemperal dementia is leading to increasingly disinhibited behaviour. The youngest member is 31-year-old Dan, who was diagnosed with a rare form of genetic Alzheimer’s two years ago. Dan’s father died at 36, though at the time no-one realised why. There’s a risk that Dan’s young twins will have inherited the faulty gene, and Dan seizes the opportunity to take part in a cutting-edge experiment in the hope that it will help find a cure in the future.

2. The Power of Music
Vicky sets out to see the impact of music on people in the later stages of dementia. She visits a care home offering music therapy and sees how their unique approach is benefiting the people there. Four choir members take part in an unprecedented experiment when they are scanned at the University of Nottingham to see how the different parts of their brains communicate when listening to music despite the damage caused by their dementia. The three-month scientific study to see whether singing in the choir has any measurable physiological effect on them comes to an end, and Vicky announces that in a matter of weeks they are going to perform at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham in front of an audience of 2,000 people.

The placebo effect has long enjoyed a notorious reputation. To attribute a cure to the placebo effect, was to consider, with a touch of contempt, that the illness was the product of the mental state of a hypochondriac. If he invented his illness, he could invent his cure. Now, in contradiction to these theories, scientific studies carried out over recent decades show that the placebo effect can result in physiological changes that are both observable and quantifiable. By means of a rigorous investigation this film aims to shed fresh light on a powerful phenomenon that is associated with every medical act, in order to lift the veil on part of its mystery and begin to explore our formidable power for self-healing.

Transgender Kids
From the moment we're born, our gender identity is no secret. We're either a boy or a girl. Gender organises our world into pink or blue. As we grow up, most of us naturally fit into our gender roles. Girls wear dresses and play with dolls. For boys, it's trousers and toy cars. But for some children, what's between their legs doesn't match what's between their ears - they insist they were born into the wrong body. They are transgender children, diagnosed with gender identity disorder, or gender dismorphia, and their parents insist this is not a phase.

Most transgender children still live in the shadows, hiding from a world that sees them as freaks of nature. Rejected by their families, many grow up hating their bodies, and fall victim to high rates of depression, drug abuse and even suicide. Today, hundreds of families with transgender children - who have found each other over the Internet - are taking a dramatically different course. They're allowing their children to live in the gender they identify with, in order to save them from a future of heartache and pain.

In this shocking yet touching film, we will follow the lives of four transgender children to discover what it is like to realize you were born in the wrong body so young. We will find out how young children change their apparent gender and how families cope with having a transgender child.

The Long Goodbye
Our brain makes us who we are, it gives us our memories, our ability to think, to understand the world around us and it gives us our sense of self. All this is slowly stripped away for a person living with dementia. The Long Goodbye follows the journeys of three families living with dementia as they struggle to maintain the identity and dignity of those they love. Filmed over a 3 year period, the programme celebrates the capacity of the human spirit to search for meaning and hope when the end is known and inescapable

The three families are at different stages of the condition and they each offer a different perspective. Michael, a criminal barrister with four teenage children was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 49.

The second strand is from the perspective of Myrle, an elderly carer committed to looking after her husband of 60 years until his dying day. Well into the mid stages of his Vascular dementia, Ken requires constant care and supervision. A fiercely independent woman, Myrle knocks back all offers of help, she sees it as her duty and is determined to carry out the caring responsibility alone.

The final strand is from the perspective of Tom, a 72 year old carer who is desperately struggling to look after his wife Brenda who is in the latter stages of her Alzheimer’s disease. No longer able to care for Brenda at home, Tom very reluctantly opts for dementia specific residential care.

Living & Breathing
In this programme, we witness how three women from three different countries (US, UK, France) cope with one such chronic illness: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (or LAM for short), a rare and fatal disease which usually attacks the lungs of women in their childbearing years and can progressively cause respiratory failure.

The difficulties, uncertainties, and isolation derived from living with this disease are relieved by the measures of joy that are still to be found in life - even under these circumstances. Against all expectations, the disease becomes a great battle that leads these women to reinvent themselves and their lives with greater meaning than ever before. They teach us profound lessons about what is important in our own lives, how we face imminent mortality, and whether happiness is still possible despite being afflicted with such an illness.
