Sue makes her final stop at the Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi's most prestigious funeral pyre, where bodies are burned on open fires so their souls can be released into a different realm.

Sue visits the Women's Industrial Training College, a girls-only college teaching young women to be engineers. Leaving the smoggy streets of Patna, Sue heads out into the countryside, where millions of small farms are watered by the Ganges and its tributaries. South of Patna, the Ganges splits in two. Sue follows the Indian branch, called the Hooghly, onward to the great city of Kolkata. Sue's final destination is Sagar Island, in the mouth of the river. Sue is here from dusk till dawn on the biggest night of the week, where two million people are expected to bathe in the Ganges as the sun comes up.

Sue's first stop is the ancient city of Patna, capital of Bihar state, along the banks of the Ganges. It was once the centre of the British Empire's lucrative opium trade. Sue visits the Women's Industrial Training College, a girls-only college teaching young women to be engineers. Leaving the smoggy streets of Patna, Sue heads out into the countryside, where millions of small farms are watered by the Ganges and its tributaries. South of Patna, the Ganges splits in two. Sue follows the Indian branch, called the Hooghly, onward to the great city of Kolkata. Sue's final destination is Sagar Island, in the mouth of the river. Sue is here from dusk till dawn on the biggest night of the week, where two million people are expected to bathe in the Ganges as the sun comes up.

Simon is introduced to a Siberian community that worships a former traffic cop they believe to be the reincarnation of Christ. Simon visits Dagestan, a largely Muslim region that has been scarred by jihadist violence. President Putin’s government is investing heavily in the illegally occupied territory – building a huge bridge linking Crimea to Russia. Travelling across Russia’s vast western plains, Simon discovers depopulated villages and a rural community clinging on to existence and feeling abandoned by central government. Arriving in Moscow, he meets a victim of Russia’s draconian laws against protests. Finally, after a journey spanning 4,000 miles, Simon arrives in St Petersburg, where he joins fighters at a martial arts club.

Naturally, we fly above the 3,427 kilometres of coast. Taiwan lies between the China Sea and the Pacific to the east of the Strait of Formosa. A secret island, with many paradoxical facets. From Taipei, its capital and largest in Taiwan, we fly towards the Strait of Formosa. 180 kilometres of sea and wind separate the People's Republic of China from the island of Taiwan.
In the middle of the Strait lies an archipelago: the Penghu Islands, more commonly known in Europe as Pescadores Islands, a reminder that these islands were conquered by the armed vessels of the Spanish and Portuguese.
