Secrets of The Human Body
The human body is the most sophisticated organism on earth. It’s a scientific marvel and much about it remains a mystery. This series uses cutting-edge graphics to effectively peel back the skin and reveal the surprisingly beautiful biological processes that keep us alive. A chilling dip in an icy lake demonstrates how shivering might save our lives and low-level torture in a London laboratory highlights the way our bodies block pain. Discover the fascinating and finely tuned systems that keep the body motoring – and the scientists guessing.
1. Grow
生長
Over your lifetime you undergo an extraordinary change - no other animal on earth goes through such a dramatic metamorphosis. In this programme, we explore the latest understanding of how we all grow, uncovering the reason our childhood is longer than any other creature on Earth and reveal the communities of microbes - our microbiome - that we cultivate throughout our lives. We also discover the mysterious trigger for our transformation from child to adult and, for the first time, show the remarkable spark of life that is emitted when sperm and egg first meet.
2. Survive
生存
In this programme, we discover the everyday miracles that keep you alive, exploring the extraordinary lengths our bodies go to in order to keep our organs working at every moment of every day. We see how powerful reflexes keep us safe from danger and uncover the amazing mechanisms our bodies call on to repair damage. And for the first time ever, we see exactly how our immune system's killer cells go into battle against deadly infection.
3. Learn
學習
This final episode explores the way our experiences shape our minds and bodies as we make the journey from the most helpless to the most sophisticated organism on earth. Discover how we develop new skills - whether riding a bike or learning to walk. We reveal the unexpected link between our heartbeat and our ability to talk. And see, for the very first time, how memories are formed in our brains, and how our experiences continue to change our bodies and even our genes themselves throughout our lives.

Metamorphosis: The Science of Change
Metamorphosis seems like the ultimate evolutionary magic trick: the amazing transformation of one creature into a totally different being: one life, two bodies. From Ovid to Kafka to X-Men, tales of metamorphosis richly permeate human culture. The myth of transformation is so common that it seems almost pre-programmed into our imagination. But is the scientific fact of metamorphosis just as strange as fiction… or even stranger? In this programme, filmmaker David Malone explores the science behind metamorphosis. How does it happen and why? And might it even, in some way, happen to us?

Secret Life of Growing Up
Packed with stories of human resilience and reinvention, these two films reveal how humans grow from children into adults. For humans, the process of growing up is the most dramatic in the animal kingdom. We’re the only species that needs a ‘teen age’ to accommodate the extreme changes that occur in our bodies and brains. Secret Life of Growing Up meets the people who illustrate how we mature, from the five-year-old girl whose verbal skills saved her mother’s life on a call to the emergency services, to the 100-year-old woman whose yoga practice keeps her young. Each story is presented with the stunning Secret Life of … cinematography that makes the ordinary seem extraordinary.
1. Teenagers
Growing up is the most astonishing transformation: one moment we’re cute and cuddly bundles of joy and everybody loves us, but next we’re bursting with emotions, and spots, and everybody hates us - or so it seems! Scientists are only now discovering the many extraordinary things that happen to us as our bodies grow, and our minds mature, revealing these years are what make us who we become as adults, in all our amazing detail.
2. Golden Years
We’re all living longer - at least one baby born this year will likely reach 150 - so what we think of as ‘old’ is changing, and while we’re often told that we can be as young as we feel, science is now proving this has never been truer. We’ll reveal the extraordinary secrets of aging so that you never see ‘growing old’ in the same way again.

Infested! Living with Parasites
From the face mites on our eyelashes to the amoebae that reproduce in our mouths, we all act as hosts to parasites - and we barely give them a second thought. In this programme, Michael Mosley infects himself with some of the most powerful and surprising of these organisms to find out how this fascinating relationship works, from the disgusting tapeworm to head lice and leeches. He is carefully monitored over a period of weeks as his parasites get used to their new home, revealing how an infestation takes hold and the effect it has on the human body. He also explores the growing scientific evidence that suggests some parasites might even be beneficial... Over the weeks, Michael itches and scratches his way to a newfound respect for these fascinating organisms.

1. The First Eight Weeks
100 trillion cells. 280 days. One human life. The person you are was decided before you were even born. The way you smile, the environments you thrive in, the colour of your children's eyes - from the moment you're conceived to the moment you're born, each critical event in the womb can change your life forever. And the clock is ticking. In this programme, Michael Mosley tells the story of our first eight weeks - the most perilous time in the womb.
2. Against the Odds
In episode two, Michael Mosley tells the story of our middle weeks in the womb - when we become an individual. At 8 weeks we all appear to be the same, but in the next stage of our development an incredible series of transformations takes place that makes each of us unique. Our instantly recognisable faces finish forming, we become left or right handed and our skin takes on its colour. Inside, we are developing our own bespoke immune system and as our brains are being organised, our personalities start to form. It's even believed that our feelings about sex and gender may be established long before we are born.
3. The Final Push
In the last part of this epic series, Michael Mosley charts the final months of life in the womb when cartilage hardens to form the skeleton. We meet Janelly, who was born with no bones and who only survived thanks to an experimental drug. The brain is developing rapidly too. 100 billion new connections each day are laying the foundations for memory. We meet memory man Joey, whose brain is incapable of forgetting anything he has experienced, which leads Michael to investigate exactly when our earliest memories are formed. Memories are created by what we experience through the senses and these too mature in these final weeks, though on the island of Pingelap, the sight of one in ten develops differently.

Secrets of Bones
Ben Garrod, primatologist and master skeleton builder, shares his unique passion for bones. He embarks on a very personal journey through the remarkable and surprising story of how a single, universal body plan - the skeleton - has shaped the animal kingdom. There are over 62,000 species of vertebrate of every size and shape from squirrels to sperm whales and aardvarks to anacondas. Each skeleton differs in small, but critical ways and, in Ben's hands, those differences are decoded to reveal an animal’s complete life story - not only how it moves, where it lives and what it eats, but also its entire evolutionary journey. Secrets of Bones brings the remarkable world of bones to life in a unique way. By conducting fascinating experiments, meeting expert contributors, using integrated graphics and a wealth of archive from the BBC's Natural History Unit, Ben unlocks a fascinating and hidden world we never get to see.
1. Size Matters
Evolutionary biologist and master skeleton builder Ben Garrod begins a six-part journey to discover how bones have enabled vertebrates to colonise and dominate practically every habitat on Earth. Ben shows us what bone is constructed from and how it can support animals that are both minuscule - a frog just a few millimetres long - and massive - the blue whale, two hundred million times bigger.
2. Down to Earth
Evolutionary biologist and master skeleton builder Ben Garrod discovers how the skeleton has adapted for vertebrates to move on land in a remarkable number of ways. They can swing through the trees, slide on the forest floor, dig through dark subterranean worlds and run at speed across the savannahs. Ben explores the role of the spine in both cheetahs and snakes, shows how adaptations to the pentadactyl limb have helped gibbons and horses thrive and how one unique bone in the animal kingdom has been puzzling scientists for years.
3. Into the Air
Ben Garrod finds out how the skeleton has allowed vertebrates to do the most remarkable thing of all - take to the air. He discovers why the humble pigeon is such an exceptional flier, uncovers bony secrets as to how the albatross makes mammoth migrations and finds out why some birds have dense bones. Finally, he reveals which surprising flier is his 'ultimate'.
4. Sensing the World
Ben Garrod delves into the surprising ways in which bone has evolved to help vertebrates sense the world around them. He reveals why predators like the wolf have eyes at the front of their skull whereas prey animals such as sheep usually have eye sockets on the side of their heads. He finds out how the skull of the great grey owl has helped it develop such extraordinary hearing and uncovers the secret behind one bizarre creature's uniquely flexible nose.
5. Food for Thought
Ben Garrod uncovers the secrets of how vertebrates capture and devour their food using extreme jaws, bizarre teeth and specialized bony tools. He takes a cherry picker up a giant sperm whale's jaw, finds out which animal has teeth weighing five kilos each and which uses its skull as a suction pump. Ben gets his own skull scanned and 3D printed to discover how diet in humans isn't just affecting our waistlines but is also changing the shape of our bones.
6. Sex
性
Ben Garrod seeks out the big part that bones can play in reproduction. Through sexual selection, the skeleton has adapted to aid courtship, competition and even copulation. On his travels, Ben meets baseball players, drops a 10kg weight on a sheep's skull and finds out that by not having a penis bone humans are very much in the minority.

Life Story
David Attenborough brings us the universal story that unites each of us with every animal on the planet, the story of the greatest of all adventures - the journey through life. For animals there is just one goal in life - to continue their bloodline in the form of offspring, the next best thing to immortality. The series shows how animals attempt to overcome the challenges that face them at each of the six crucial stages of life as they strive towards ultimate success.
1. First Steps
初生
In the first episode, animals overcome their first great hurdle - surviving infancy. A young animal enters the world full of hope and armed with a relentless refusal to give up. At this early stage random chance often determines who survives. This is a time to learn fast, to find ways to turn the odds in your favour, before stepping out on your own.
2. Growing Up
成長
In the journey towards adulthood, a moment comes for all animals when they must strike out on their own. With their parents absent they must learn to survive in a dangerous world. At this stage of life every small success may mean the difference between life and death.
3. Home
安家
To survive, animals need somewhere to live, a place that provides the necessities of life, shelter from the elements and a refuge from enemies. Good homes are rare and competition can be intense - finding a home is one thing, but defending it is quite another.
4. Power
掌權
An individual's life journey interweaves with many others. Those who are successful know when to fight or back down, when to cooperate or to go it alone and how to manipulate and deceive. But power is the ultimate prize: animals will use any means to rise through the ranks and win the game of life.
5. Courtship
Competition to win a partner has created some of the most extraordinary beauty and life-threatening violence anywhere in nature. Dazzling colours, elaborate dances and powerful weapons have all evolved to attract and defend a mate. The stakes could not be higher: without a mate, the journey of life ends here... sometimes literally.
6. Parenthood
養育
In the final challenge of the game of life, raising offspring is the ultimate prize. Continuing the line through the next generation, is the next best thing to immortality. But it's far from easy... Some parents must risk their own lives for their offspring.

Many scientists had assumed that humans stopped evolving when we started insulating ourselves from the whims of nature. But the mapping of the human genome means that scientists now have a history of our evolution. We see that, astonishingly, not only have humans continued to evolve over the past 50,000 years, we may have been evolving more quickly than at any time in our history. Dr Alice Roberts finds out how we could evolve in the future and asks if we can control the evolution of plants and animals, can we control our own evolution?

The Truth About Fat
In this programme surgeon Gabriel Weston wants to find out why we're getting fatter. Ultimately she doesn't believe that it's simply a failure of self-control. She knows that the usual advice - to eat less and exercise more - just isn't working for most of us.
From the power of hormones on our appetite to stomach surgery, genetics to the impact of a pregnant woman's diet on her unborn child, Gabriel discovers the science behind the obesity epidemic and we investigate whether science can really help us change.

Inside the Human Body
Michael Mosley embarks on an astonishing voyage through the world's most complex organism - you. This series takes us deep under our skin where we are dwarfed by even the smallest cell, where blood vessels become vast cathedrals and the tiniest cluster of cilia becomes an expansive forest.
Our body's almost infinite ability to adapt and surprise is illustrated by the stories of remarkable characters whose bodies allow them to do amazing things, live in incredible places and push their physiology to the limits. Spectacular photography shows human behaviour in super slow motion, revealing elements of ourselves that we are completely unaware of.
1. Creation
Series exploring the wonders of the human body. Using spectacular graphics based on real images and the latest scientific research, Michael Mosley takes viewers on a voyage through the workings of the inner human universe. Travelling through the body, tiny clusters of hairs loom as large as a forest and hidden chambers of the heart rise up like a vast cathedral. To illustrate the surprising ways bodies work, the series also tells the stories of remarkable people from around the world who have pushed theirs to the absolute limit.
From the moment of creation to our last breath, the series reveals the human body's ability to amaze and delight. Mosley tells the story of human biological creation. He brings to life surprising medical research, revealing the improbable sequence of events that lead to birth. State-of-the-art graphics follow millions of sperm on their dangerous race towards the egg, revealing the ingenious ways that a woman's body selects the best; illustrate a body begining to self-assemble; and, in a television first, show a human face coming together. The programme follows the progress of a couple who are expecting triplets, from the 4D scan when they first come face-to-face with their babies to the dramatic finale of birth. Plus, meet a woman expecting her 16th baby and the oldest conjoined twins in the world.
2. How You Survive
In this episode, Michael Mosley shows how existence is a struggle and how, minute by minute, from your first breath to your last, your body performs countless small miracles to keep you alive. It starts with a dramatic water birth, shot in slow motion, before a stunning graphics sequence takes us on a breathtaking journey into the heart. We see how that first, crucial breath leads to a dramatic re-plumbing of your entire circulatory system. Michael meets remarkable people who demonstrate how well the human body adapts to extreme environments: Herbert, a world-champion free-diver, who can hold his breath in the depths of the ocean for up to nine minutes; Wim, the Ice Man, who can swim in glacial lakes so cold they would kill a normal person; and Debbie, who has lived for 10 years on a diet of crisps. And finally we see what happens when your body finally fails; we share the last moments of Gerald, an 84-year-old, as he passes away at home with his family gathered around him.
3. Building Your Brain
In this episode, Michael Mosley traces our development from birth to adulthood, and reveals that the human brain is so sophisticated it takes more than twenty years to mature. We see how new-born Phoebe makes sense of the world, and how one-year-old Angelina copes with just half a functioning brain. We discover how Moken sea Gypsy children train themselves to see clearly underwater, and meet a Vietnamese girl who speaks 11 different languages. Michael shows his own teenagers remarkable scans which reveal just how many brain connections we lose between the ages of 11 and 20. This remodelling is an essential part of growing up, and helps explain teen behaviour and their tendency to take risks - as illustrated by Stephanie, the world's youngest stock car racer at the age of 13.
4. Hostile World
In the final episode of Inside The Human Body, Michael Mosley reveals the ingenious ways in which your body defends itself against a hostile world - where sunlight shatters your DNA and every breath contains microbes that can kill. We meet Cristian, a bull jumper whose muscles give him the strength to avoid a violent death, three-year-old Rowan whose internal army fights off the flu virus, and Johnny who gets injured almost every week to earn his living, relying upon his body's remarkable ability to heal. And when injuries are too severe to be repaired, we see how surgeons use medical expertise to exploit the body's natural powers of healing. Richard Edwards is filmed having his damaged hands cut off and replaced with someone else's - the first time something this radical has ever been attempted.

After Life: The Strange Science of Decay
Ever wondered what would happen in your own home if you were taken away, and everything inside was left to rot? The answer is revealed in this fascinating programme, which explores the strange and surprising science of decay.
For two months in summer 2011, a glass box containing a typical kitchen and garden was left to rot in full public view within Edinburgh Zoo. In this programme, presenter Dr George McGavin and his team use time-lapse cameras and specialist photography to capture the extraordinary way in which moulds, microbes and insects are able to break down our everyday things and allow new life to emerge from old.

To Go Boldly
An immersive, high-octane series that traces the extraordinary journey that took humans from the deepest depths of the ocean to the edge of space - and beyond. We think of ourselves as a global species. But in fact we can only comfortably survive on less than a quarter of the Earth’s surface. Despite this, we have never stopped searching for new horizons - in just under 100 years we have gone from the first manned flight to walking on the moon.
Doctor of Extreme Medicine Kevin Fong looks at how we’ve managed to do it. He studies how our bodies are affected by extreme environments. In this fascinating series, he uses his own body to demonstrate just what happens when we face the planet’s most deadly effects. Exploring the sophisticated technologies that protect us, he also showcases the artificial life systems and wizardry that have made our adventures possible.
1. Down
In this first programme, about how to survive underwater, Dr Fong escapes from a sinking helicopter, walks through a tank of sharks in an antique diving suit and intentionally gives himself nitrogen narcosis.
We have one fundamental problem with water - we can only survive under its surface for as long as we can make one breath of air last. But the way our bodies respond can dramatically alter how long we can make that breath last - a fact graphically demonstrated by Kevin's attempt to escape from the Royal Navy's helicopter escape trainer.
2. Up
In the second programme of the series, Dr Fong is going up to find out how the body responds to altitude. The short answer to that question is: badly - as Dr Fong finds out, climbing one of the tallest mountains in the Alps, and subjecting himself to a sudden depressurization to 25,000 feet. But although we struggle to deal with altitude, the defining story of 20th-century technology was our quest to leave the surface of the earth behind and travel up through the atmosphere and into space.
